When and how often does the team practice?
We practice twice a week at night to avoid any conflict with classes. Practices are one hour each and take place at one of two rinks located on campus.
Is the UD Women's Ice Hockey Team a club sport? What league does the team participate in and what teams do you play against?
Just like the men's hockey team at the University of Delaware, the women's team is a club sport. Both teams participate in the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) which is a nationwide intercollegiate hockey program in which over 300 women's teams participate. We also participate in the DVCHC (Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference) which consists of other ACHA teams in close geographic proximity to us. These teams include: University of Maryland, University of Virginia, American University, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel and Princeton.
Do I have to be a full time student to play on the team? Can I be a graduate student?
ACHA guidelines stipulate that a student-athlete be enrolled in a minimum of twelve credit hours for freshmen and sophomores working toward associate and bachelors degrees, nine credit hours for juniors and seniors working toward the same; and six credit hours for students working toward masters, doctoral or professional degrees. Each semester a student-athlete must successfully complete (pass) a minimum of nine credit hours for those working towards associate and bachelor degrees, six credit hours for master, doctoral or professional degrees.
In addition, players are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 by the beginning of a student athlete's second year of eligibility.
When are your games and how many do you play each season?
Games are Friday nights and weekends. During the '05-06 season we are scheduled to play 17 games.
How long is the season?
The team begins practicing in early September with games beginning in mid-October. The season ends late February.
What do I have to do to join the team?
If you're interested in joining the team, please contact our Team President, Sarah Kemp or our Head Coach, Sharon Addison with our Contact Us Form. They'll be happy to answer any questions you have and let you know how to get started.
How much does it cost to join the team? Is equipment provided?
Since the ice hockey program at the University of Delaware is a club sport, little funding is provided by the school. Therefore most of the cost is absorbed by the players. However, team fundraising activities are used to help offset the costs. Dues range between $350-$450 for each player. This covers ice rental costs and various league fees, along with the player's uniform and warm-ups. Other equipment required for the sport is the player's responsibility.
Do you offer scholarships for women's ice hockey?
As a club sport, funding is not available for scholarships.
Do you travel far for away games and how much does it cost?
Most of our away games are within two hours driving distance and don't require overnight accommodations. However, when we do have farther trips, our team rents vans or carpools. When an overnight stay is required, the expense is picked up by the team and already included in the players. season dues. Meals however, are paid by each player.
Do I have to have experience before joining? What experience do the existing players have?
Each year, our incoming talent level continues to rise. While the team strives to recruit women that have some prior playing experience or at least some skating experience, we are happy to work with new players. As a fairly new club sport, the players and coaches readily accept inexperienced players who are willing make a commitment to the team and to learn the sport.
The team consists of players with a variety of skill levels and experience. Some played in high school or earlier, while for others their hockey experience began with the UD team. Players with more experience still find the team and competition challenging. Regardless of experience and skill, everyone works together to make a strong team. You'll find that the teams we play against also have a similar range of skill level.
Can I play on the team part time?
Hockey is a team sport which requires all players to be at practice and games. To play on the team you must commit to being a full time participant.
Will hockey take up all my free time?
You'll find that with just two practices a week and games on weekends, you have several nights available for other activities whether of a scholastic or social nature. Most players feel that the UD women's ice hockey team requires just the right amount of commitment and dedication while providing a fun, friendly and competitive atmosphere.
How many players are on the team?
USA Hockey guidelines permit only 20 players dressed and on the bench during games. However, the UD team accepts additional players that may not be ready for games and therefore attend practices, support the team and participate in all team activities.
I don't attend the University of Delaware but I'm interested in playing women's ice hockey, is there a team in the area I can play for?
Yes, several of the UD coaches and players play on a local women's team called the Delaware Bobcats. For more information about this team go to www.delawarebobcatshockey.org
